Evolution of massive binary stars

The realisation that most massive stars live in close binaries, and the continued detection of gravitational waves events drives the need to understand massive binary evolution. However, predictions are still hampered by major uncertainties. We will discuss the current efforts to minimise those, through improved model physics, comprehensive model grids, and detailed comparisons with observation of evolved massive binaries, in particular with semi-detached systems, and OB stars with helium star and compact companions. We will identify strategies for optical and X-ray observations to derive further strong constraints on the potential evolution of massive binaries to double compact objects.
